Finding the circle of friends, colleagues, and mentors to be able to call when you want to cry is the hardest thing to find in life. To be able not to feel guilty or burdening others by talking and "they" listen is special indeed.

I had never thought about the term “mental health” in the way that Simon described it. We throw the term around a lot, especially now as we have begun to realize that how someone is doing mentally/emotionally is just as important, if not more, than their physical health. Though I never considered before that using the word “health” can imply that if someone is experiencing different emotions such as sadness then something is wrong, but in reality it is normal and actually good for us to experience a wide range of emotions. Simon brought up the term “mental fitness” because within that we have the range of emotions from joy, to sadness, anger, loneliness, etc. and each one of those serves a purpose. I really liked this term and agree with everything Simon said regarding the importance of looking at it this way and not looking at our emotions through the lens of “there is only one right way to feel.” I hope to be able to incorporate it and use it to encourage people that it is okay to sit with their different emotions and remind them that does not make them any less of a person, but rather means they are working on the mental fitness. I think that by switching the focus from “mental health” to “mental fitness” we can encourage people to explore their emotions more and not be disappointment in themselves if they have a day where they are just not feeling great, because just as we all have days where we are weaker in the gym, we are going to have days where we aren’t the happiest we could be. I think that through doing this we are encouraging people and what could be potential patients that just as they do things to work on their physical health such as eating right and exercising, they can also work on their mental fitness through sitting with those different emotions and valuing them. When you experiences sadness it can make you experience happiness more because you now understand what it feels like to be on the other side. When I think about this in terms of ethical principles and what we should be doing as humans, but as a future physical I think that encouraging people to view their emotions this way and be okay with feeling different ways is a great example of beneficence, or the act of doing good and preventing harm. I say this because it is our human nature to be sad, happy, upset, and joyful and if we tell someone that feeling these things isn’t right or natural we are forcing them to try and believe that something is wrong or that they need to put on a mask if they are experiencing what others deem as an inappropriate feeling. That can have negative effects on both their mental state, but physical as well so through encouraging people to be willing to experience different emotions and to be honest with them we can better take care of them because we know what they are facing.

Perfectionists are prone to depression and disappointment, because it doesn’t exist. When I did a counselling course, we weren’t allowed to say ‘fine’. When he gives the example of going blank on stage, there’s a theory about that. His mind did it deliberately. The reason for this is that your subconscious wants to know if consciously you are prepared to go to the next level or if you’ll duff out in the future. So it shuts down its help in the most critical situation to see what you’ll do. If you dig yourself out of it and come back for more, your subconscious thinks, ok you’re up for this let’s go to the next level together. Hope I’ve explained that well, but that’s the gist of it. x

This is less about the term and more about the meaning we ascribe to the term so just changing the word isn’t the goal. The goal would be to nuance what it means. I agree with the sentiment. Society by and large is so intolerant of emotions and keen to pathologise and medicalise their emotional experiences rather than seeing them in context and understanding it’s part of what it means to be human. What he’s saying is not new and there are thousands of professionals and survivors campaigning about this across the world. If you want to see some real experts talk about this I’d suggest you look at people like Jacqui Dillon, Lucy Johnstone, Mary Boyle, James Davies, Peter Kinderman.

Umm no. I can't wait until, we as a society, get past this idea that someone who has mental health issues, "is just having a dark day".
There are people who have tangible, real disorders in their brains. They deserve real compassion and care, not to be discarded because they aren't "productive".
Next thing we know, people are gonna start claiming that mental health is just a fad and you can "catch it" by listening to a song or watching a TV show.

Mental health is the wellbeing of your mind. There is no destination, we go through ups and downs in life, seasons in life and this affects the state of mind i.e mental health". Mental health as a term is not supposed to define reaching perfection, that's more about how you view mental health. If you view it this way then it's dangerous because perfection doesn't exist. Mental health is a wide subject matter with many subheadings but the term is simple.

When someone asks you how you are, it should not appear as if they are asking for your emotional or physical health report. Greetings should be taken as merely a salutation, i.e. I see you fellow human. I shouldn't be expected to and don't need to hear about somebody else's mental angst just because I greeted them. So, it's definitely OK to answer 'fine' to 'how are you' except when you are your therapist's office.

I like Simon Sinek's work but I think he simplifies the concept of mental health here. "Fitness" typically relates to an activity of some kind that aids in the improvement of overall health, but the term "health" (especially in mental health) doesn't refer to an end destination or state - it relates to our overall ability to navigate life in the face of ups and downs, and that includes allowing for all emotions, states and circumstances. Work by Steven Hayes (developer of ACT), Les Greenberg (EFT), and Seligman (Positive Psychology) emphasises this point. So, mental health *is* the description of our ability to navigate the ups and downs of life (rather than trying to avoid, suppress, or deny what we feel, for example). Mental "fitness" would describe the stuff we do to maintain mental health (e.g., exercise, get sufficient sleep, practice self-acceptance, engage in enjoyable activities, etc.)
Definitions matter because, if we're saying "mental health" is an unhelpful term, it's likely to add to the stigma. Just like we engage in fitness to aid our physical health, we can also do the same to improve our mental health. But he's right in the sense that some people imply mental health is to be "happy and positive" all the time, but that's not at all what the concept means.

I find that interpretation of 'mental health' unusual. Simon's description of his own term 'mental fitness' is exactly how I interpret mental health. What he describes as his interpretation of mental health is what we would normally refer to as mental illness. If I'm sitting around eating lots of junk food and not exercising, I would say I'm not healthy. I'm not ill, I'm not sick - just unhealthy. Same mentally. And the point of our collective focus on mental health lately, is that that IS OK. It's fine to take time for yourself, to have off days, and to prioritise whatever maintenance you need.
Not disagreeing with his point just find that interpretation and the need for a new term unusual. What he's describing is toxic positivity - not healthy at all. Is this how mental health is interpreted in the US?

The talk might be out there on youtube, but the workplace and 99% of jobs are still the same silly shit and 99% of people try to get by to pay bills, not searching for fulfillment in their dayjobs. The hustle youtube sphere has only ever been a bubble fo maybe 5% of the workforce to begin with.

This is such clickbait. "mental health" and "mental fitness" are like the exact same thing. When I think about mental health, I don't think of it as an all or nothing thing, the way that he seems to think about it. and when I think "mental fitness" I don't automatically think sliding scale.
